The Transportation Committee is an advisory committee and local board.

It reviews, advises and assists with transportation related issues as identified for review by a City Department or City Council.

It has no independent authority and is responsible for providing recommendations to Council for approval.

Meetings

Meetings are held monthly on the 4th Thursday at 4:30 pm or at the call of the Chair in the Sir Mackenzie Bowell (SMB) room on the 3rd floor of City Hall at 169 Front Street, Belleville, ON., K8N 2Y8. Meetings are open to the public.

Work

Handles process for requesting a change to traffic signage, parking, speed limits, and other transportation concerns.

    Terms of Reference

    The mandate of the Transportation Committee is to:

    • (1) Review transportation related issues as may be identified for review by a City Department or City Council.
    • (2) Act in an advisory capacity to Belleville City Council on issues specific to transportation arid provide recommendations to Council regarding any suggested improvements including appropriate amendments to the City’s Traffic By-law.
    • (3) Provide advice and recommendations to Council on strategic priorities related to the development of Active Transportation infrastructure projects.
    • (4) Foster and advocate for active transportation modes within the community by assisting in the implementation of the Transportation Master Plan and other related plans.
    • (5) Review, advise and assist in implementing transportation policies, programs and facilities that help to increase active transportation.
    • (6) Provide direction on issues pertaining to trail safety and the education and promotion of the environmental, social, economic, and health benefits of active transportation.
    • (7) Work with municipal committees and other organizations to promote and enhance Belleville's recognition as an accessible, pedestrian friendly and cycling friendly community (i.e. Bicycle Month, Bicycle Friendly Community Program, Walk Friendly Community Program,  etc.).
    The Deputy City Clerk will ensure that administrative support for the Committee and support with respect to amendments required to the Traffic By-law are provided and that appropriate staff from the department are in attendance at the meeting.The Director of Engineering and Development Services will ensure that technical reports and recommendations applicable to the issue(s) being considered by the Committee are provided and that appropriate staff from the department are in attendance at the meeting.The General Manager of Transportation and Operation Services will ensure that technical reports and recommendations applicable to the issue(s) being considered by the Committee are provided and that appropriate staff from the department are in attendance at the meeting.The Director of Recreation, Culture & Community Services and the Manager of Parks will provide support as required.Source
