As per Open Council’s Content Standards, all information published must be available to the public and attributable to a reliable, published source.
Open Council will remove or correct factually incorrect published information upon request, such as if the source we refer to has changed, or if new information has come to light. We appreciate when people take the time to gives us a head up – it helps us keep the site up-to-date.
1. My personal data is publicly available on Open Council
OpenCouncil.ca collects the information it presents from public sources, and mainly from the official recordings and documents of municipal councils. However, we understand that there may be cases where your personal data is displayed in a way that concerns you. In such cases, we recommend that you follow these steps:
- Please contact us here providing details about the data that concerns you and the reason for your request.
- At the same time, inform the relevant municipal council about your request, as this is the primary source of information.
We will carefully consider each request and take the necessary actions, taking into account both your right to the protection of personal data and the public interest in transparency in the operation of municipal councils.
2. Some words are rendered incorrectly
At OpenCouncil.ca, we use artificial intelligence technology to automatically transcribe and organize information from municipal council recordings and documents. Despite our efforts for accuracy, we recognize that there may be instances of incorrect rendering of words or statements.
If you identify any inaccuracies or misrepresentations, please contact us immediately here. In your message, please include:
- The link to the specific page where you found the error.
- The exact quote you consider incorrect.
- The correct wording, if possible.
- Any additional information that will help us correct it.
We are committed to reviewing all correction requests as soon as possible and making the necessary corrections, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the information we provide.

Request information be added?
If there is an event, document, statement, motion or other update missing from a page or timeline, let us know and we’ll add it.
Request removal of information?
Generally, the activities of elected officials while in office as well as organizations, employees or representatives who represent the public or receive public funding are not removed as they are in the public interest and are recorded for posterity.
The profiles of unsuccessful candidates are taken offline when they are no longer running for office.

Why is [X] included?
Information included on Open Council is available to the public via the open web or Freedom of Information requests.
We believe the details included are in the public interest.
Personal/family information
Details about careers and business interest are included for council members and their families because they pertain to indirect pecuniary interests under the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act. The Act applies to the interests of parents, spouse and adult children, but we expand that to extended families, if their interests are local.
