Job description
This position is responsible for maintaining and overseeing the functioning and installation from design to construction of the traffic light/streetlight systems within the city.
The role of the Traffic Technician is to maintain and oversee the functioning and installation from design to construction of the traffic light/streetlight systems within the city. Collaborating and working with public works personnel and sub-contractors in the construction, installation, maintenance, repair and operation of traffic signal/streetlight systems. The position will develop and schedule work priorities including 24 hour/day emergency repair to ensure proper signal function.
The position will investigate and communicate with suppliers of traffic control equipment and recommend various innovations and improvements to the traffic infrastructure to the City Engineer and Operations (Traffic) Supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Perform traffic signal maintenance/emergency after hours field work.
- Be responsible for installation and design of new and modified signal equipment and complete installation of new intersections.
- Conduct electrical/electronic repair of traffic signal equipment in-shop, software/programming debugging.
- Be responsible for administrative duties including preparation of budget requirements, reports, proposals, designs, project estimates, general inquiries regarding traffic signals from public, police and internal departments.
- Perform traffic counts, analyze data, traffic signal justification, signal timing/pattern programming.
Education and training
Minimum Qualifications:
- Construction & Maintenance Electrician (309A)
- Demonstrated Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, specialized traffic control software and design software, computer hardware experience for interconnection to traffic control equipment.
- Valid “G” Driver’s License with clean drivers abstract.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification by International Municipal Signal Association.
Experience
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of 1 years’ experience as a certified electrician with traffic signal or PLC knowledge.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Three (3) years’ experience as a certified electrician with traffic signal or PLC knowledge.
- Two (2) years’ supervisory experience
- International Municipal Signal Association Certified Traffic Technician
