Dear Belleville Community,

In these trying times, we want to have an open conversation about the recent concerns regarding the safety of our cherished downtown core. The events of the past few days have stirred emotions, but we want to reassure you that the Belleville Downtown District remains a resilient, safe and welcoming community.

Mayor Neil Ellis rightly pointed out that recent incidents do not define our downtown. Our city is more than just a location; it’s where we live, work, and come together. It’s disheartening to see negative narratives overshadow the unique charm of our downtown and the remarkable businesses that make it special. We are here to address your concerns and emphasize that our community is safe, welcoming, and steadfast.

Facing Real Issues:
Addiction, mental health, and homelessness are challenges faced not only by Belleville but by communities nationwide. Belleville officials have reached out to higher levels of government for support, recognizing that these issues transcend specific areas. As a community, let’s confront these challenges together and support one another.

Supporting Our Community:
The press release from February 7th, 2024, sheds light on the ongoing efforts of the Downtown Belleville BIA through the Welcoming Streets program. Not only does Welcoming Streets support downtown businesses with uncertain situations, they also actively engage with individuals who experience challenges regarding mental health, substance use, and/or homelessness. Welcoming Streets is committed to connecting people to vital services, and creating a downtown environment where everyone feels respected and included.

Explore Our Downtown Core:
We warmly invite residents and visitors alike to rediscover the charm of our downtown core. From quaint shops to bustling cafes, our community’s vibrancy is on full display. Join us for the ‘Savour the Chill’ soup contest on February 24th for an extra layer of culinary delight in your Downtown exploration. Let’s celebrate the heartbeat of our city together!

United in Strength:
Belleville’s Downtown District is more than a hub of thriving businesses; it’s a testament to our commitment to safety and community well-being. Collaborative efforts between businesses, law enforcement, and community leaders have resulted in effective safety measures. We are dedicated to fostering a secure and welcoming atmosphere where commerce and community thrive hand-in-hand.

Building Resilience Together:
The Belleville Downtown District BIA and Welcoming Streets are determined to build a resilient and thriving community. Learn more about our initiatives at downtownbelleville.ca/welcomingstreets.
