The City of Belleville is pleased to announce the signing of Dr. Ukemeobong Michael Uwah into the Belleville Doctor Recruitment Program. Dr. Uwah has just started his practice at the Great Lakes Walk-In Clinic in Belleville where he will roster his own patients and see walk-in clients.

“Dr. Uwah, most recently from the United Kingdom has just moved to Belleville and is in the process of setting up his practice and is getting settled in a home here.  He has great experience as a family physician and is ready to welcome patients at the Great Lakes Family Clinic,” said Mayor Ellis. “Council is pleased that we have been able to recruit Dr. Uwah – he has already started providing exceptional care to our residents at the clinic and we look forward to seeing him build a prosperous career here in Belleville.”

“I have had the pleasure of learning and practicing in other countries and I’m so pleased I can settle in a beautiful and welcoming community like Belleville. Belleville feels like my ‘Bethlehem’ where I’m born into the Canadian Healthcare System,” said Dr. Uwah.  “I look forward to passionately serving the residents of Belleville and strengthening our healthcare in the years to come. My family and I are committed to establishing our roots in this community.”

Although healthcare and physician recruitment are not a municipal responsibility, the City of Belleville has recognized the shortcomings of the Provincial Health Care system and has implemented one of the most successful recruitment programs in the province, recruiting nearly 53 physicians and eight nurse practitioners. The program is funded by the dividends the City receives as a shareholder of Elexicon Energy and to date, over $7 million has been committed to attracting primary healthcare providers.

For residents in need of a family physician or a nurse practitioner, it is important to register with Health Care Connect (HCC). HCC is a resource used by physicians and government agencies to place patients with physicians and can be relied upon by doctors and nurse practitioners when developing or expanding their roster of patients. Registering with HCC is the key to finding primary health care in Ontario. You can register with HCC by calling 1-800-445-1822 (TTY 1-800-387-5559) or by visiting the HCC website.
