After seeking proposals for an original art piece to be gifted as mementos to distinguished guests earlier this year, the City of Belleville is pleased to announce its two selections for the 2024 call.

“Naturally Beautiful Shorelines” by Anne Seguin – This ceramic vase is made of porcelain clay and hand carved with lines representing the Bay of Quinte and Moira River waters. The sailboat depicts one of the favourite pastimes of the Belleville area. The carved lines of water transition to a carved feather, representing our indigenous traditional territory. Trees are also carved into the landscape representing the unspoiled nature surrounding the city. City Hall is also depicted with the half circle line above it symbolizing the Bay Bridge that leads to nearby Prince Edward County.

“Urban Belleville” by Kimar Francis – Within the intricately engraved contours of this art piece depicting the Bay of Quinte and road networks of Belleville’s urban area, lies the physicality of the cityscape and historic City Hall. Etched with meticulous precision, the depiction captures more than mere geography; it encapsulates the essence of Belleville’s identity, a city nestled amidst the embrace of nature, yet intricately connected through its networks of roads, weaving a tapestry of movement and connectivity. As the eye traces the lines etched into the medium, it follows the sinuous curves of the Bay of Quinte, a shimmering expanse of water that serves as both a natural boundary and a source of inspiration.

The pieces will be gifted to dignitaries, international guests and corporate representatives who visit Belleville as a warm reminder of their time here.

“We are very pleased with the submissions received for this project that celebrates original art in our community,” said Manager of Economic Development Elisha Maguire. “I would like to thank everyone who took the time to share their art and ideas with us over the past few months. This is just a reminder of the incredible talent we have here in our community. We hope to be able to showcase many more pieces in the future!”

Two proposals for original work were selected among the 23 proposals received. The talent in the region is abundant and staff have identified submissions well suited for other projects and opportunities where the work of these artists can be showcased. The City is thrilled to be celebrating the artistry of the Bay of Quinte region and looks forward to being a partner in future artisanal projects.
