On February 22, 2022 the Ford government announced they were “making life more affordable and convenient for nearly eight million vehicle owners” by eliminating licence plate renewal fees and the requirement to have a licence plate sticker for passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, motorcycles and mopeds owned by individuals and companies, effective March 13, 2022.
The Ford government will give up at least $1B in revenue so vehicle owners save $120 a year in southern Ontario and $60 a year in Northern Ontario for passenger and light commercial vehicles. Individuals who had already renewed their licence plate between March 1, 2020 and March 2022 were refunded. Companies did not receive refunds.
The 2022 Ontario election took place 3 months later on June 2, 2022.
