Council motion “be received” shelves it, no further action is taken

When council passes a motion that states a presentation, report or other information “be received” or “be received as information” and doesn’t specify a next step or action required – such as asking staff to do something with it – it means that it goes nowhere. The municipality is essentially filing it away or throwing it out.

I’ve been around here a long time, I know the rules, receiving it shelves it. There’s no action taking on it. We accept it, we file it, and it goes nowhere.

Belleville Councillor Paul Carr
